Dysport vs Botox: What’s The Difference?

Viva Day Spa + Med Spa Austin, TX Dysport vs Botox

Let’s take some time to compare Dysport vs Botox. Mark Twain once wrote, “wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.” And while we are certainly not here to refute that, we also know that most people over the age of 30 may qualify that with, “but not too many wrinkles”. Which is why the popularity of neuromodulators (Botox and Dysport) have taken the beauty industry by storm.

These minimally invasive cosmetic injectables soften moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles that develop as we age. That’s why they are often referred to as “wrinkle relaxers.” But what exactly is the difference between these two very similar treatments?

Dysport vs Botox

The key differences between Dysport and Botox is the cost per unit, the number of units used per treatment, the protein structure, and the length of time between your treatment and visible results.

Formula

While both are neuromodulators, these two products are composed of different formulas based on the proteins used in each. Botox contains a protein shell around the modulator that takes longer to break down. Dysport contains a milk protein that spreads more once injected, breaking down the modulator faster. That’s why you’ll see results sooner with Dysport, typically 7 days compared to 14+ days with Botox.

Units Per Treatment

Dysport is a more diluted product than Botox. That means more units are need to achieve the same results as a Botox treatment. The general rule is 1 unit of Botox is equivalent to 3 units of Dysport. Even though Dysport is less expensive ($4.50/unit) than Botox ($13.50/unit), the total treatment cost tends to be the same because of the larger number of units required for Dysport.

Duration of Results

The FDA indication for how long these treatments last is up to 4 months for both Botox and Dysport. However, some patients report that Botox lasts longer. Dysport can also be harder to find, while Botox is available at virtually every med spa and doctor’s office.

When comparing these two aesthetic treatments, keep in mind that every body is different, which means that one treatment might just work better for you. Some people who haven’t responded to Botox report that Dysport gives them better results. Your experienced cosmetic injection specialist will help you decide which one is right for you. They both deliver the same safe and effective results, but there are subtle nuances between them. Let’s take a look at this handy infographic to better understand the pros and cons of Botox vs. Dysport.
