Imagine if you could take just 3% of your day — 43.2 minutes out of every 24 hours — to be mindful of what’s most important to you.
When we announced the #VivaGives December campaign a few weeks ago, we were excited for the opportunity to help spread the love in Austin this holiday season. But, it’s also a chance to talk about volunteering throughout the year with Austin’s Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas (BBBS).
“I didn’t have to think too hard about what charity I wanted to nominate for #VivaGives,” co-founder Shannon Mouser says. “I’ve been a Big Sister since 2008. The chance to mentor a child who needs some extra help has been a real blessing to me and a way that I can give back to others. Viva Day Spa has contributed throughout the years to BBBS with silent auction gifts but to give a larger contribution is something I’m thrilled to finally be able to do.”
Bringing Austin’s “Bigs” and “Littles” together in a unique model of one-to-one mentoring is what BBBS does best. The impact of this pairing of adult mentors (“Bigs”) with children (“Littles”) has a direct and lasting effect on the lives of Austin’s young people.
In fact, BBBS serves more than 1,000 children in Travis, Williamson, Hays and Bell counties every day. Many have the odds stacked against them, but with the help of their mentor, they are taking steps toward a brighter future.
Last year more than 99% of the children served by BBBS remained in school while 97% of them improved or maintained their grades. To achieve these outcomes, volunteers donated more than 90,000 hours of their time and staff made 13,317 interactions with program participants.
BBBS also awarded 91 students a total of $58,000 in scholarship support from the BBBS Foundation’s Scholarship Program. Austin’s BBBS agency is ranked in the top 5 percent for program quality out of 350 BBBS agencies nationwide. And, donations to BBBS of Central Texas stay in Central Texas.
Your purchase of an Instant Viva Gift Certificate or Classic Viva Gift Certificate ensures BOTH a happy friend or family member AND a donation to this worthy cause benefiting “Big” and “Little” Austinites in need.
