This is the time of year that many of us think of family, friends, and the blessings that we have. For Viva co-owner Laurie, it was especially important to think about giving hope to children and families that are in difficult circumstances. This is why she chose Austin Children’s Shelter as our third December #VivaGives charity recipient.
“Becoming a mom in 2012 made me look at the world differently,” says Laurie. “Children, at the very least, need to feel safe and protected, and knowing there are ones who are less fortunate than that made me choose to give to this organization. The Austin Children’s Shelter protects and heals children and families in need.”
Since 1984, the Austin Children’s Shelter has provided emergency shelter and high quality care for abused and neglected children. In Austin alone, over 18.000 Austin women and children suffer from abuse each year.
With over 78 beds and guiding principles focused on safety, respect, dignity, the power of caring and play (and more), Austin Children’s Shelter serves children from birth to age 21 as they transition to foster care, to family members or, safely back home.
In addition to serving as an emergency shelter, Austin Children’s Shelter also provides residential- and community-based programs, including a Transitional Living Program, Teen Parent Program, Respite Care, Foster in Austin, and Strong Start.
The success stories of these programs may not always make the news, but they certainly have a profound impact on the individuals and families who benefit from them. And, that impact has a positive ripple effect for Austin.
Want to help Austin Children’s Shelter? There are many ways to give whether through a direct donation, by providing needed items from their Wish List, or through their Project Santa program. You can make a difference.
