Austin Breast Imaging: Get Your Mammogram Giveaway

Self care is crucial for everyone’s health and well being. That belief is at the foundation of why Shannon, Laurie and Maya founded Viva back in 2005. But we’re here to say that it’s especially important for women.

Self-Care for Super Women

More often than not, women are the primary caretakers of their worlds. According to a 2020 Gallup poll, women now make up 50% of the US workforce but still take on a larger role in household chores, child care, and taking care of aging parents. In fact, mothers did three times as much child care as fathers during the pandemic. The result? Women often don’t spend as much time caring for themselves.

At Viva Day Spa + Med Spa, we understand that self-care means more than just scheduling your next massage for some “me time.” It also means taking care of our overall health. That’s why Viva is proud to be joining forces with Austin Breast Imaging to encourage women to take a big step forward in their preventative care by scheduling an annual mammogram.

Why Get Your Annual Mammogram?

A mammogram is the single most important thing a woman can do to lessen her chances of dying from breast cancer. Doctors use mammograms to detect for early signs of breast cancer, before women can feel a lump. Sometimes up to three years before it can be felt.

  • Early detection is the best detection. It’s the closest thing we have to disease prevention
  • Our risk of developing breast cancer increases as you age, even if no one else in the family has it
  • More than 75% of women who have breast cancer have no family history
  • Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in women in the US (some kinds of skin cancer are more common). It is the leading cause of death from all cancers
  • According to the American Cancer Society, early-stage breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of 99 percent. Later-stage cancer has a survival rates of 27 percent
  • It only takes 20 minutes of your time!
  • Plus, if you’re over 40, it’s likely free with insurance

Who Should Get A Mammogram & How Often?

Here’s guidance from The American Cancer Society on how often women with average risk for breast cancer should get screened.

  • Women ages 40 to 44: should start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms
  • Women age 45 to 54: should get mammograms every year
  • Women 55 and older: should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening
  • Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer
