Your Everything Laser Hair Removal Guide

With an annual average of 228 days of sunshine, Austinites spend the majority of our year in bathing suits — or shorts and short sleeves at the very least. That means that if we want to keep our skin looking as smooth and silky as possible, we have to do a lot of upkeep. If you’re looking for an alternative to tedious shaving and costly, frequent waxing, laser hair removal is going to be your new best friend.

So throw out those razors and pull up a chair. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about laser hair removal.

Is Laser Hair Removal permanent?

Technically, no. Per the Mayo Clinic, laser hair removal uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to heat the hair follicles. This puts them in a dormant state that prevents new hair growth. After each laser hair removal session, hair growth is drastically reduced. You’ll also notice that when hairs do grow back they are finer and lighter in color. In addition to decreasing hair with each treatment, laser hair removal also reduces the number of ingrown hairs and helps prevent razor bumps, burns, and irritations so that your skin will be as soft as after a clean shave.

So even though it is often referred to as a “permanent” hair removal solution, it is more accurate to describe laser hair removal as long-lasting.

How long does laser hair removal last?

The average patient will need six to nine treatments to notice the major reduction of hair growth. After this, any hair regrowth can be easily managed with a yearly touch-up treatment to keep your skin silky smooth.

Laser hair removal is effective for eliminating hair on all parts of the body, except for around the eyes. Common treatment areas are:

  • Face
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Underarms
  • Bikini line
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Lips
  • Ears

How effective is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal can vary from person to person. On average, patients should expect that it will remove 80 to 90% of hair.

Our hair grows in cycles, so while some hair follicles are in the growth phase, others are at rest. Because laser hair removal only eliminates hair in the growth stage, multiple treatments will be necessary before you notice permanent reduction. The average person will need between six to nine treatments for maximum results, and one treatment per year thereafter is suggested to maintain your results.

It’s important to remember that hormonal changes — such as getting pregnant — can increase hair growth, but a maintenance treatment afterward will balance it out and get you back to silky-smooth skin!

How does laser hair removal work?

When you visit Viva Day Spa + Med Spa, you’ll have a quick chat with one of our experienced laser technicians so they can answer any questions, and make sure that laser hair removal is the right service for you. Then we’ll get you ready for your treatment so your life without unwanted hair can begin!

During your treatment, laser beam wavelengths travel through the skin to target your hair follicles. The high-energy laser light safely targets the pigment in the root of the hair, converts to heat, and destroys the follicle. This prevents future hair growth without damaging the surrounding skin.

Viva Day Spa’s laser hair removal treatment is extremely quick. The total time depends on the size of the treatment area. For example, treatment of both legs usually only requires a 30-minute session.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, it’s possible to feel some mild discomfort during your laser hair removal treatment. However, most people report feeling no pain whatsoever. Traditional lasers can leave a hot feeling over the skin, but Viva’s Triton laser device has a built-in cooling tip that cools the skin before and after each follicle extraction, so even your minimal discomfort is further reduced. However, it’s important to us that you feel 100% comfortable in our care, so we also offer numbing cream (Lidocaine) to ease your stress.

After your treatment, you’ll notice some slight redness and swelling (a condition called folliculitis) of the skin that will dissipate in a few short hours. Because this treatment requires no downtime, you can return to your daily activities immediately after your session. The only limitation is that you should avoid heat on your skin for the rest of the day, which means no sunbathing, soaking in a hot tub, or working out.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Many med spas use a hair removal device with only one wavelength. Viva Day Spa + Med Spa uses laser technology that’s the first of its kind. Triton by InMode is the world’s first FDA cleared multi-wavelength hair removal device. It utilizes 755, 810, and 1,064 nanometers, which makes it high powered and safe enough for all skin types. It’s also able to treat almost all hair colors.

Does it work on all skin types?

While some spas only offer laser hair removal services for lighter skin tones, our new Triton laser hair removal tool allows us to treat clients with a wide range of skin tones and hair colors. This tool obliterates black and brown hair like a boss. The only hair it can’t treat is blonde, red or gray hair (not enough pigment). But, hey, that’s why there’s waxing and sugaring!

Summertime is the perfect time to indulge in a little pampering. And laser hair removal treatment will save you so much time on shaving and waxing, you’ll have more of it to spend at the pool or on the beach instead!
